Why common treatments haven’t worked for your acne

The most common treatment for acne is benzoyl peroxide. This is found in the many over-the-counter treatments that are heavily advertised.

Benzoyl peroxide produces free radicals in your skin, which can cause premature aging and weaken your skin’s ability to heal.

It’s a vicious cycle…where it tears up your skin leaving you looking overly sunburnt, but you stay that way longer because your skin can’t heal itself normally.

Salicylic acid is another common ingredient found in many different face washes and scrubs. The side effects are irritation and burning in the skin.

If you are using a salicylic acid product in combination with a benzoyl peroxide product — which many people do — the irritation takes longer to heal.

Both of these are topical treatments and since they don’t address the dietary and hormonal imbalances in your body, your acne will return.

What about prescription treatments or cosmetic procedures?

Prescription treatments for acne focus on killing the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes—or P. acnes for short. But here’s the catch…

Acne is not caused by bacteria!

P. acnes bacteria aren’t even required for you to get ugly, red, swollen acne.

How do we know this? A study published in the journal Experimental Dermatology and Lipids in Health and Disease suggests exactly this… that acne can be present even without P. acnes. Bacteria do not cause acne, and yet dermatologists are still prescribing antibiotics. Sounds crazy, right?

Cosmetic procedures such as laser, light and UV therapy also focus on reducing P. acnes to control acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Don’t throw your money down the drain on treatments that don’t even target the true cause of acne!

Why doesn’t your doctor or dermatologist ever mention nutrition as part of acne treatment?

Your hormones – insulin, cortisol, IGF-1, androgens, estrogen, etc. – go wild for various reasons (menstrual cycle, puberty, genes, stress, nutrition status, etc.), which can cause acne.
